The “Occupied Istanbul: Urban Politics, Culture and Society” research project aims to build on growing interest in Istanbul during its occupation by British French and Italian forces during the years 1918-1923. It is led by Assistant Director, Daniel-Joseph MacArthur-Seal, whose recent book, Britain’s Levantine Empire, 1914-1923, was centred on the city’s occupation. The project has two main outputs. The first is to organise an international conference on the topic. This had been scheduled in September 2020 to be held at Boğaziçi University, with the partnership of the History Department, the American Research Institute in Turkey, Institut Français des Études Anatoliennes and Salt Galata, but was necessarily postponed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The second, carried out with the support of Gizem Tongo, is to produce a collaborative, multi-lingual bibliography giving access to all relevant primary and secondary sources for the study of the armistice-era.
