Summary

In memory of archaeologist Dr David French, Director of the British Institute at Ankara from 1968 to 1994 and indefatigable explorer of Turkey ancient and modern, his family have established two scholarships to be administered by the Institute.

Eligibility

Two travel grants of up to £1,000 each are available to support undergraduate or postgraduate students to develop knowledge and understanding of the region’s history, geography, culture and environment.  Applications relating to an individual’s first visit to Turkey for study purposes will be particularly welcomed.

Applicants should be enrolled on a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD programme at a recognised UK Higher Education Institution. The fieldwork or other research activity for which support is sought may relate to any historical period up to and including contemporary Turkey.

Application process

It is essential that applicants read these notes and the accompanying conditions of awards before completing the application form.  Applicants in any doubt about their eligibility or any other aspect of their application are advised to contact the British Institute at Ankara (BIAA), where staff will be pleased to assist.

The deadline for receipt of applications and references is 17 April 2022. The BIAA Research Committee will consider all applications received before this date.
