Summary

The British Institute at Ankara (BIAA) is seeking to appoint a part-time Editor of Annual Publications

This role comprises two elements:

  • Editor of Anatolian Studies, and
  • Editor of Heritage Turkey

Further information about the responsibilities related to each of these elements is set out below.

Anticipated working arrangements are as follows:

  • Your normal hours of work are 25% of a full-time week of 36 hours, arranged as may reasonably be required for the performance of your duties.
  • You will normally work from home, save for occasional in-person meetings when necessary.
  • Your Line Manager will be the Chair of the BIAA Publications Committee.
  • Your leave entitlement is 7.5 paid days per year, with the leave year running from  1st April to 31st March.

Start Date: Monday 4th December 2023

Salary: £36,024-£44,263 pro-rata, depending on experience.

Pension: The Institute offers membership of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS); details of the scheme are available on request.

Responsibilities of the Executive Editor for Anatolian Studies

  • Administer the ScholarOne submission system: monitor the smooth functioning of this online submission system, and liaise with CUP when necessary concerning it.
  • Check and assign new submissions: The ScholarOne system will alert you when an article has been submitted. It is your responsibility to check each new submission against the checklist of basic requirements, including ensuring that images are of the required quality. This must be done within a set period after the submission of each article. Articles that do not meet the standard checklist requirements should be returned to the author with an explanation. Articles that meet the requirements should be assigned to the appropriate Academic Editor.
  • Copyediting and checking accepted submissions: The ScholarOne system will alert you when an Academic Editor has accepted the final text of a submitted article for publication. You are responsible for copy editing and proofreading both manuscripts and page proofs of accepted articles. This means: using the style guide or, as needed, logic, to make consistent final calls on any language-editing issues; checking and correcting citations and references in all languages; checking and correcting typing errors, and grammatical mistakes, in particular by non-native English speakers; checking all figures for sufficient image quality, as well as for comprehensibility/legibility of the image; and checking image captions and copyright information. This must be done within a set period after the acceptance of an article.
  • Creating and handling proofs to publication: Corresponding with authors about any necessary copyediting changes, producing initial page proofs using appropriate software, sending proofs to authors for checking, undertaking reasonable changes to the proofs requested by the authors, forward the final (checked and corrected) proofs to the Academic Editor for approval, corresponding with authors to ensure they have signed copyright forms permitting their articles to be published, liaising with CUP to create DOIs for articles, submitting the articles to CUP and ensuring that they are published via FirstView and are ready for publication in print form, keep records of the publication process. This must be done in good time for the production of the print journal each year.
  • Record keeping and reporting: Communicating with both the Academic Editors and the Chair of the Publications Committee, helping to preparing an annual report for the meeting of the Publications Committee each autumn, attending the Publications Committee each autumn.
  • Liaise with the London office: update the London office regarding progress of the publications, ensuring the final product is available on the relevant online portals.

 

Responsibilities of the Editor of Heritage Turkey

  • Solicit and administer submissions: Planning the content of the magazine with the Director and London Manager before corresponding with authors (BIAA grant holders) regarding submissions, keeping records of submissions.
  • Administer revisions: Reviewing submissions and providing feedback to authors on submissions, corresponding with authors about revisions, checking that revised manuscripts have made all the changes required.
  • Copyediting and checking accepted manuscripts: Copy editing and proofreading both manuscripts and page proofs of accepted article. This means: using the style guide or, as needed, logic, to make consistent final calls on any language-editing issues; checking and correcting citations and references in all languages; checking and correcting typing errors, and grammatical mistakes, in particular by non-native English speakers; checking all figures for sufficient image quality, as well as for comprehensibility/legibility of the image; and checking image captions and copyright information.
  • Creating and handling proofs to publication: Corresponding with authors about any necessary copyediting changes, producing initial page proofs using appropriate software, sending proofs to authors for checking, undertaking reasonable changes to the proofs requested by the authors, creating DOIs for articles, creating the magazine, arranging for printing of the magazine and uploading the digital edition to the BIAA website.
  • Record keeping and reporting: Communicating with the Chair of the Publications Committee and the Research Committee of successful/unsuccessful submissions, helping to preparing an annual report on HT for the meeting of the Publications Committee each autumn, attending the Publications Committee each autumn. Responding to image permissions and requests that the institute may receive from time to time.
