Summary

The British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara (BIAA) is searching for a candidate to fill the permanent, full-time position of Ankara Manager at the Research Centre in Ankara.

The ideal candidate is experienced in finance-related matters, but is also highly skilled in organisational and management-related issues. The Ankara Manager at the BIAA is responsible for the smooth operation of all administration of the Research Centre and liaises with the BIAA London Headquarters on finance- and budget-related matters. We are a small team that reacts swiftly to challenges and opportunities and therefore seek a flexible person who can react swiftly to unexpected turns of events and is willing to think outside the box.   

The British Institute at Ankara (BIAA) was founded in 1947 and is internationally renowned for conducting world-class research in Türkiye and the Black Sea region in the humanities and social sciences. As one of the British International Research Institutes (BIRI), the BIAA facilitates the work of UK-affiliated academics in Türkiye and promotes collaborations with scholars based in Türkiye and the Black Sea region. It has offices in Ankara and London, and a dedicated staff of experts from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. Its premises in Ankara are maintained by a small administrative and research staff, providing a Centre for Research Excellence for postdoctoral fellows, research scholars and visiting researchers (https://biaa.ac.uk/about/). With the BIAA Director and the Assistant Directors, the manager is part of the management team at the research centre in Ankara. Together, they run the research centre. 

Eligibility

Essential requirements 

  • Fluency in Turkish (min. ‘Proficient’ – C2) with excellent English language skills (min. 6.75 IELTS, min. 90 TOEFL) 
  • Ca. 10 years of experience in a comparative, preferably international environment 
  • University degree from a discipline relevant to the role.   
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programmes (Office 365) as well as Zoom 
  • Operational knowledge of online accounting systems – BIAA is using Xero 
  • Excellent Interpersonal skills and team player 
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Attention to detail and accuracy 


Job Description
 

The Ankara Manager is responsible for:  

  • Financial Management: accounting, overseeing BIAA and project-related budgets in close collaboration with the BIAA director, the London Manager and the BIAA Honorary Treasurer 
  • In collaboration with the BIAA Director, liaising with a variety of Turkish authorities, ranging from local to national level.  
  • Supporting the BIAA director to advocate for British scientific teams and liaising with the relevant Turkish authorities and museums, assistance of British teams in administrative matters (permit applications, project reporting) 
  • HR: line-management of administrative staff, maintenance staff and caretaker; general supervision of the BIAA’s SGK and tax affairs 
  • In collaboration with the BIAA Director, supervision of the BIAA’s domestic arrangements, BIAA premises and BIAA Guesthouse 
  • Overseeing organisational matters for events (lectures, workshops and conferences; Zoom set-up and management) 
  • Contributing to IT management and social media


The BIAA Offers:
 

  • Full time (40h/week), permanent position, in person after a 6-month probation period.  
  • Renumeration: to be negotiated

  • Official Turkish holidays as well as minimum annual leave required by Turkish law
