Summary

The British Institute at Ankara (BIAA), one of the British International Research Institutes (BIRI) supported by the British Academy, invites applications for a Research Scholarship tenable for up to 7 months from September 2022.

The successful applicant, who will be based at the Institute in Ankara, will work with the Director and Assistant Director on enriching the extensive digital archive of BIAA projects and events.  The scholar will also work as part of the library team and will be involved in updating the library’s digital records.

The appointee will be required to spend at least two-thirds of their time on Institute-related work, and a third of their time conducting their own research on any topic within the field of the arts, humanities and the social sciences relating to Turkey and/or the Black Sea region.

The scholarship is worth £800 per month, payable as a non-taxable grant.  The BIAA will pay the cost of the scholar’s Research Visa, Residence Permit, travel insurance and one return flight between the UK and Turkey.  Accommodation will be available at the Institute in Ankara, as required, at a discounted rate of £10 per night or £250 per month.

Eligibility

Candidates should have completed a Master’s degree no more than eighteen months prior to the application deadline, and confirmed results at the time of appointment will be favoured.  Applicants must be intending to conduct research at doctoral level.  The research undertaken at the BIAA should normally be preparatory and designed to underpin a PhD funding application.

Basic knowledge of database building, good command of Excel, basic to moderate skills in image and video processing and good communication skills are essential criteria for this post. Applicants must be normally resident in the UK and must have a demonstrable connection with a UK academic institution.
