The BIAA premises in Ankara will host the workshop in December 2025.
Since 2021, the British Academy- and Antiquity-funded “Rewriting World Archaeology programme” has run a series of 18-month workshop programmes of virtual and in-person mentoring events for early career researchers (ECRs) from low- and middle-income countries in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. These are designed to equip participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to access and publish in academic journals, develop and lead bold research agendas, and share their results with the public.
This year, the Rewriting World Archaeology: Middle East team, led by Prof. Robin Skeates (Editor of Antiquity; Durham University) and Prof. Cameron Petrie (Director and Trustee of Antiquity; Cambridge University), is organising a new round of workshops focused on ECRs based in the Middle East – specifically Iran, Türkiye, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan. The programme seeks to significantly advance the careers of a new cohort of ECRs, strengthening their ability to (re)write the archaeology and heritage of the Middle East to have a major and lasting impact on world archaeology. It will consist of online workshops and individual mentoring sessions, supported by a variety of digital resources, and an in-person workshop hosted at the BIAA in Türkiye in December 2025.
If you are an ECR scholar and your goals are to become an internationally recognised archaeologist and archaeological heritage scholar, to help reshape world archaeology, or to see your research published in reputable international journals, do consider participating in the Rewriting World Archaeology: Middle East Writing Workshop and mentoring programme. Eight ECRs from a variety of countries and academic/professional backgrounds will be selected from applications.
