Urartian Sites Survey

Location: Van Province

Year: 1956

Project Director: Charles Burney

Participants: Peter and Mrs. Hulin

Summary:

Between mid-June and mid-August 1956, Charles Burney completed a series of mound surveys around Lake Van and also in the districts of Bulanık, Malazgirt (Manzikert), Palu, and Dersim.  He recorded many previously unknown Urartian sites near Lake Van.  Some cuneiform inscription fragments were found, and fortresses and towns were sketched or otherwise documented. In this same year the Hulins also did some extensive fieldwork in provinces of eastern Turkey.
