BIAA-Hosted British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellowship

  • Call opened: 05/09/2021
  • Deadline: 27/09/2021

Eligibility Summary

Applicants must normally have been approved for their doctorate between November 2018 and April 2022 and must be either UK/EEA nationals or have strong associations with a UK Higher Education Institution.  More information about the scheme, including full eligibility criteria, is available here.

The British Institute at Ankara (BIAA) invites early career researchers focusing on Turkey and the Black Sea region to apply for a fully-funded British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship hosted or co-hosted by the BIAA. The 36-month fellowship should commence between 1 September 2022 and 1 January 2023, and must lead to a significant piece of publishable research. The fellow is also expected to gain teaching experience at a UK Higher Education Institution for a semester or more during the fellowship, agreement for the provision of which is needed before submitting the proposal to the British Academy by 14 October.

While this opportunity is open to all those working within the humanities and social sciences, applicants should take into consideration the BIAA’s thematically-focused Strategic Research Initiatives, which reflect current academic themes relevant both in the UK and in the region. The BIAA is also interested in working in partnership to co-host fellowships with Higher Education Institutes or other British International Research Institutes (BIRI).

About the BIAA

The British Institute at Ankara (BIAA) is one of the British International Research Institutes (BIRI) supported by the British Academy. It promotes research and academic collaborations in Turkey and the Black Sea region in the Humanities and Social Sciences, including archaeology, ancient and modern history, social and political sciences, and heritage management, as well as in climate and environmental science. It provides grants and fellowships to British Higher Education Institute-affiliated scholars, funds and facilitates British-led research, supports scholars from Turkey and the Black Sea region to travel to the UK for a period of study, and hosts regular academic events.

The BIAA premises in Ankara host a library, a laboratory and reference collections which provide a first-class base for postdoctoral research projects which focus on Turkey and the Black Sea region. Researchers will be provided with office space and can take advantage of in-house accommodation. Previous postdoctoral fellows working at the Institute have an outstanding record of finding good academic positions worldwide.

Prospective candidates are invited to send an up-to-date CV and summary of their proposed project (1,000 words max.) to by Monday 27 September. The BIAA will work with approved candidates to submit an outline proposal to the British Academy by their deadline of 14 October.
