Eligibility Summary

The British Institute at Ankara (BIAA) seeks to recruit a Deputy to the Honorary Treasurer to strengthen its volunteer management team at a time of increasing financial and regulatory challenges for charities.  The BIAA is a company limited by guarantee  (#00477436) and a charity registered in England and Wales (#313940).  Candidates should have experience in financial management within the commercial or not-for-profit worlds and, ideally, hold an accountancy qualification.  


The British Institute at Ankara supports, enables and encourages research in Turkey and the Black Sea region in a wide range of fields including archaeology, ancient and modern history, heritage management, social sciences and contemporary issues in public policy and political sciences. Founded in 1948, the BIAA was incorporated in the 1956 cultural agreement between the Republic of Turkey and the United Kingdom. The BIAA is one of the British Academy's overseas Institutes. It has offices in Ankara and London, and a dedicated staff of experts from a wide variety of academic and cultural backgrounds.  London-based professional staff consist of a full-time London Office Manager, a part-time Senior Development Manager and a part-time Communications Assistant.  Information about the Institute’s activities can be found on our website at https://www.biaa.ac.uk/.


Subject to the experience and interests of the person recruited, it is envisaged that the Deputy Honorary Treasurer will be responsible among other duties for the following functions:-

  • Serve as a Trustee.
  • Deputise for the Honorary Treasurer as required, including attendance at Council meetings.
  • Serve on the Finance and Personnel Committee.
  • Monitor the monthly management accounts and report any issues to the Honorary Treasurer, Finance Committee and/or Council as appropriate.
  • Agree the content of the Quarterly Report and reforecast for the British Academy with the London Manager and forward it to the Honorary Treasurer.
  • Support the London Manager in liaison with Ankara as required.
  • Visit Ankara at least during the first year of appointment.
