Congratulations to John McManus

Many congratulations to John McManus, one of the BIAA's honorary research fellows, who has been awarded joint runner-up in the British-Kuwaiti Friendship Society Book Prize for his book: Welcome to Hell? In Search of the Real Turkish Football. This prize has been awarding "books of sound scholarship which enhance understanding of the Middle East among a wider readership" since 1998.

This is the first book to shine a light on contemporary Turkish football. Based on ethnographic fieldwork, archival material and interviews, it explores the social, cultural, economic and political impact of Turkey's favourite game. The British-Kuwait Friendship Society described it as a "superb and valuable contribution to the academic and non-academic literature on current Turkey as well as the evolving study of the nexus of sports, politics and society in the Middle East."

Şevket Pamuk was awarded the prize with his work on Uneven Centuries: Economic Development of Turkey Since 1820. Whilst Elias Muhanna shared the runner-up position with John for his book: The World in a Book: Al-Nuwayri and the Islamic Encyclopedic Tradition.
