Congratulations to Bettany Hughes OBE

We would like to congratulate our BIAA Honorary Patron: Bettany Hughes, who was recently appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Princess Anne in her investiture. She received the award in the Queen's Birthday Honours 2019 for her services to history. We are honoured to have her wonderful support and promotion of Turkey's remarkable history.

Dr. Bettany Hughes is an award-winning historian, author and broadcaster. She became our Honorary Patron of the Institute in 2015. She promotes learning and understanding through work with educational charities and establishments around the world. She has examined the history of ideas from religion to philosophy, linking eastern and western cultures, and the ancient with the modern world in over fifty film and radio documentaries.  Across the world, her productions have been seen by over 250 million viewers! 

She has received several academic distinctions, including the Naomi Sargant Special Award for excellence in educational broadcasting in 2009 and the Norton Medlicott Award in 2010 for services to history. In addition, she has numerous awards for her contributions to popular history. Her first book Helen of Troy: Goddess, Princess, Whore, which has been translated into ten languages. Her next publication The Hemlock Cup, Socrates, Athens and the Search for the Good Life was on the New York Times bestseller list and was shortlisted for the Writer’s Guild Award.  Her third book, Istanbul:  A Tale of Three Cities, a cultural history of the ancient Byzantion, Constantinople as the Christian capital and under the Muslim Ottomans, was published in 2017. Her latest book released this year explores Venus and Aphrodite: History of a Goddess.
