BIAA Condolences Message for the Death of Professor Rosemary Hollis

With very great sadness, we bring you the news of the passing of Professor Rosemary Hollis, an expert on Middle Eastern Affairs of the greatest distinction. She was a supporter of the BIAA and a speaker at our events who bridged the span between being an authoritative scholar and a compelling political commentator as few others can.

Turkey’s relationship with the Middle East steadily developed after 2002. Rosemary’s expertise on the politics and conflicts of the region thus made a vital contribution to our understanding of political developments in Turkey as the country’s Kemalist and Western-oriented identity diminished and it became increasingly enmeshed in the affairs of Moslem nations to the south and east.

As a speaker and analyst, Rosemary was never run-of-the-mill. She could be unorthodox and challenging. She brought insight, wit, zest, and warmth to events in which she took part. As one friend remarked ‘She was great - and a lot of fun too’.  Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this sad time.
