BIAA Condolences Message for the Death of Dr Ian Jenkins OBE

Members of the BIAA are sorrowed by the news that Dr Ian Jenkins OBE, Senior Curator at the British Museum, died on 28 November 2020 at the age of sixty-seven. He was an authority on Greek art and sculpture, the history of classical collections and the reception of the Classical artistic tradition. On the trail of a group of classical statuettes, brought from ancient Cnidos to the British Museum by Charles Newton in the 1850s, he led a team to work with Professor Ramazan Özgan at the site in south-west Turkey between 1999 and 2006. Excavation showed that the find spot had been a Sanctuary of the Nymphs of the fourth century BC, and that the statuettes should be identified as a Nymphs not Muses. Ian Jenkins served on the BIAA Council of Management for several years. He was a warm and witty colleague, who will be sorely missed.
