Bioarchaeology in Türkiye: Potentials and Challenges in the Historical Periods, 18-20 March 2027, Ankara.
Co-organised by Bilkent Üniversitesi, Hacettepe Üniversitesi, the British Institute at Ankara (BIAA) and the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut (DAI) Istanbul.
Archaeology has a distinct strength in its dynamic integration with the sciences. This theoretical and methodological entanglement in Turkish archaeology has perhaps been most strongly established in prehistory, but there is also huge potential for incorporating bioarchaeological studies into research on the historical period. The sciences have made significant contributions to our knowledge of past lives and lifeways in Anatolia and neighbouring regions, with many important synthetic works produced in recent years. This has involved knowledge production and the highlighting of the importance of material from Türkiye to deepen synergies between bioarchaeology and the historical disciplines.
Against this background, this conference aims to discuss the potential and challenges of bioarchaeological research on the historical periods (Late Bronze Age until the Ottoman period) of Anatolia and neighbouring regions. Its scope also includes creating a place and time for dialogue to increase communication and integration, rather than data presentation, among historians, archaeologists, and scientists.
