To encourage scholarship relating to Turkey and the Black Sea region and support the next generation of scholars, the BIAA is planning a new initiative: a taught Masters Dissertation Prize for the best dissertation on a topic related to the research areas of the Institute. The prize will be £500 plus three years’ membership of the BIAA.
The prize will be open to students completing dissertations for a taught Masters programme (MA, MSt, MPhil) at a recognised UK Higher Education Institution on any topic related to Turkey and the Black Sea region, from prehistory to the contemporary world. It will be launched early next year, and any dissertations submitted in the 2022 calendar year will be eligible.
However, the BIAA needs your help to make this a reality. Please consider making a donation to the BIAA Masters Dissertation Prize Fund today.
Over the last fifteen years, the BIAA has benefitted enormously from the work of a succession of recent Masters graduates who have held the position of BIAA Research Scholar at the Institute in Ankara after completing their Masters studies and before, in most cases, progressing on to a PhD. Many of these individuals have gone on to hold positions at UK and Turkish Higher Education Institutions, and many outstanding Masters dissertations have provided the basis for excellent academic publications. The creation of this prize is a way for the Institute to recognise the importance of this stage in the development of a young scholar’s career.
Toward long-term support for this prize, we are asking members and associates of the BIAA to make a contribution to the Prize Fund. Our target is to reach £10,000 which should guarantee continuing awards for the foreseeable future.
