In this talk, Prof. Minawi will discuss his latest book, Arab-Ottoman Imperialists and the End of Empire, and celebrate its release in Turkish with FOL Press under the title ‘Istanbul’u Kaybetmek’.
Prof. Minawi is an associate professor of history and the director of the Critical Ottoman and Post-Ottoman Studies initiative at Cornell University. His work focuses on the history of late Ottoman imperialism in Africa and the Middle East. His first book, The Ottoman Scramble for Africa: Empire and Diplomacy from the Sahara to the Hijaz (Stanford U. Press, 2016), was translated into Turkish and Arabic, and his latest book, Arab-Ottoman Imperialists and the End of Empire (2022), was the co-winner of the Albert Hourani Book Award in 2023 from the Middle East Studies Association of North America. His current research continues to focus on Ottoman imperialism, international law, and the emergence of ethno-racial categories in Ottoman societies.
