Post-doctoral Researcher Position – Social/Cultural Anthropology or a related discipline 

The British Institute at Ankara is searching to appoint a Post-Doc researcher with a degree in social/cultural anthropology or a related field and with demonstrable experience in conducting ethnographic fieldwork, to join the on-going cultural heritage management project on Southwest Turkey.

The British Institute at Ankara supports, enables and encourages research in Turkey and the Black Sea region in a wide range of fields including archaeology, ancient and modern history, heritage management, social sciences and contemporary issues in public policy and political sciences. Founded in 1948, the BIAA was incorporated in the 1956 cultural agreement between the Republic of Turkey and the United Kingdom. The BIAA is one of the British Academy's overseas Institutes. It has offices in Ankara and London, and a dedicated staff of experts from a wide variety of academic and cultural backgrounds.

Eligibility

  1. PhD in social/cultural anthropology. A doctorate in a related social sciences field will be also accepted if the applicant can demonstrate significant experience in ethnographic fieldwork methods. PhD must have been awarded by the time of the application.
  2. Flexibility to conduct long periods of fieldwork (i.e. 4-5 months)
  3. Fluency in Turkish and English

Specifications and Requirements

  • Project Duration: 12 months – (from April 2017 till the end of March 2018)
  • Salary: 24K GBP p.a. (tax exempted). – costs such as visa, residence permit and accommodation need to be covered by this annual amount.
  • Funds are available to cover the costs of the required fieldwork and research.
  • The fellow is expected to work closely with the Project Co-Investigator (Co-I, the BIAA's Cultural Heritage Management Fellow) under the supervision of the BIAA’s director (Principal Investigator, PI).
  • The post will be subject to BIAA post-doctoral fellowship appraisal system.

Job Description

  • The fellow is expected to conduct ethnographic research in the region of ancient Pisidia (SW Turkey: modern Antalya and Burdur) and around the ancient city of Aspendos (Antalya), with the aim of providing insight in the current economic and social situation as well as the expectations of the local communities and the impact of the archaeological sites on their lives.
  • The proposed research is part of the as part of a targeted project titled “Living Amid the Ruins: archaeological sites as hubs of sustainable development for local communities in Southwest Turkey”. It makes innovative use of the archaeological heritage of Southwest Turkey, with the objectives of achieving a meaningful impact on the lives of people who live by these ruins, and of providing options for sustainable social and economic development in the local rural communities.
  • The results of the research will feed into the on-going CHM research of the BIAA and will be shared via international and national conferences as well as publications. The Fellow is expected to produce a fieldwork report and co-organise an international workshop together with the PI and the Co-I.
