The BIAA funds major research projects under its Strategic Research Initiatives (SRIs). The current SRIs are:
|
The Settlement History of Anatolia since the last Ice Age. This work is addressing important questions about man’s changing relationship with the environment, the formation of large-scale settlements, and how town and countryside relate.

The Climate History of Anatolia and the Black Sea
With the environment and climate change top of the current international agenda, Turkey and its surrounding regions have rich, under-explored natural archives: lake sediments, tree-rings, peat deposits and much more. All have important stories to tell about human interaction with – and use of – the landscape and the world humans inhabit.

The Frontiers of the Ottoman World
The Frontiers of the Ottoman World and how the Empire interacted with other territories, both Muslim and Christian. From the late 13th century until the birth of the Turkish Republic in 1922, the Ottoman Empire left a legacy evident today throughout the culture, history and politics of the Middle East and Eastern Europe. There is still much to learn, especially through closer collaboration between historians and archaeologists.
