WORKSHOP: Understanding the Challenges of Living in a Wet and Humid Climate

13 May 2017 09:00 to 21:00

Organised by the BIAA in collaboration with the Municipality of Rize, the workshop aimed first to explore the local values (i.e. climate, geography) that differentiate Rize from other cities both at the regional and the national scales; and then to understand the problems emerged due to these local specific values. The workshop is hosted by the Rize Commodity Exchange Office in the 13th of May 2017. Ten parallel focus groups were conducted with 108 participants representing different stakeholder groups such as local authorities (e.g. district municipalities, special provincial administrations), central authorities (e.g. Ministry of Urbanization), local technical staff (i.e. planners, architects, engineers), academicians, non-governmental organizations, political parties, members of county council and professional chambers. The ambition of the workshop was producing local knowledge that can contribute both to an ongoing academic research, “Climate Responsive Urban Design in the context of Black Sea Climate”*, run by Dr Ender Peker, and to the urban planning practicalities of the Municipality of Rize, particularly Rize 2053 future urban development plan.
