A new research project of Ruhr-Universität Bochum focusses on Humeitepe, a wide but hitherto scarcely studied area of the ancient commercial metropolis Miletus. The aim is to better understand the long-term settlement history of the city and its urban organization. From 2014 to 2016 an intensive survey of the area was carried out as the first phase of the project. The paper will present preliminary results of that work and combine them with the outcome of previous studies on specific structures of the Humeitepe. As a result, the functional diversity of the urban space of Miletus will become clearer.

Christof Berns is a professor of Classical Archaeology at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Germany). He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Cologne, was Alexander-von-Humboldt fellow at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) and a faculty member at the universities of Kiel, Cologne and Berlin. In 2012/13 he was visiting professor at the Uludag University at Bursa. His research mostly concentrates on monumental architecture and urban development in ancient Asia Minor and the Iberian Peninsula, and he has conducted a number of projects in Turkey. Since 2013 he has been doing fieldwork at Miletus, together with his students.
